PHONETICS PHONOLOGY
1. Phonetics belongs to descriptive linguistics. Phonology belongs to theoretical linguistics.
2. Phonetics is the study of production, transmission
and perception of speech sound.
Phonology is the study of patterns of sounds in
different languages.
3. It is concerned with sounds of language. Phonology is concerned with how sounds are
organized in a language.
4. Phonetics does not study only one particular
language.
It can study one specific language.
5. Phonetics basis for phonological analysis Phonology basis for morphological, syntactical
analysis.

characteristics of sound etc.
It is concerned with allophones, syllables
intonations, minimal pairs, assimilation juncture
etc.
10. It does not concern with meaning. It is concerned with semantics function of sound.
